(NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) presented her Nassau County Legislative Student Citizenship Award to Herricks High School senior Amanda Vargas during a ceremony on Friday, June 14.
Ms. Vargas, a National Honor Society member, has been active in the school community as Executive Board member of Freshman Focus, a mentoring group for underclassmen; Treasurer of Peer Leadership; and member of Future Medical Frontiers; Women Warriors and the bullying prevention advocacy organization Justice League. She is also a four-year varsity cheerleader and member of the Dance Theatre Club.
In addition, Ms. Vargas earned the Gold Presidential Service Award for completing more than 250 hours of service in one year. She is active as a volunteer with the Pierce Country Day Camp; the Ronald McDonald House and Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, an experience she says helped her discover her passion to pursue a career in nursing.
“Amanda’s tireless devotion to community has inspired her to make invaluable contributions to her school community and led her to comfort families and children as they grapple with daunting medical challenges in our local medical centers and hospitals,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I’m delighted to recognize her for all she has already accomplished and am eager to see the impact she will have as she branches out into the world.”
