[ARCHIVED] Legislator Siela A. Bynoe and Office of Minority Affairs Host “A Discussion on Mental Health”

Legislator Siela A. Bynoe and Office of Minority Affairs Host “A Discussion on Mental Health” Panel

At African American Museum of Nassau County

WHAT: As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe (D - Westbury) in partnership with the Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs presents “A Discussion on Mental Health.” Moderated by Dr. Carolyn McCummings, Commissioner of Nassau County’s Department of Human Services, the evening’s distinguished panel includes mental health professionals, education leaders and community members. The panel will also include a focus on stigma in minority communities related to mental health issues and treatment.

Legislator Bynoe has made advocacy for mental health first aid training a signature issue during her tenure as a Nassau County Legislator. In December 2018, Legislator Bynoe secured ratification of legislation that requires mental health first aid training for certain County employees that have direct and consistent contact with the public. This mandated training gives employees the proper tools to assist them in identifying and assisting individuals with mental health issues and substance abuse disorders so they can be referred to appropriate resources.
