Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum Welcomes Herricks High School Senate

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) welcomed the members of Herricks High School Senate for a tour of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building on Friday, March 15.

Friday’s itinerary included a presentation outlining the history of New York and Nassau County government dating back to colonial times; a question-and-answer session with Legislator Birnbaum and senior Democratic caucus staff; a tour of the building and a meeting with Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

The visit concluded with a mock Legislature session in which students conducted a public hearing on a proposed ban of disposable plastic bags in the County. The Clerk of the Legislature, Michael Pulitzer, assisted the students with procedural questions during the mock session. After adjourning, each student received a Certificate of Recognition from Legislator Birnbaum in appreciation of their participation.

“Informed participation forms the bedrock of our representative democracy, and I am hopeful that today’s experience will spark an interest in becoming and remaining involved in charting the future of our communities,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I thank the members of the Herricks Senate for the privilege of sharing the morning with them at the Legislature.”
