COUNTY ASSESSMENT NOTICES FAIL TO INFORM RESIDENTS
PRESIDING OFFICER NICOLELLO DEMANDS FULL DISCLOSURE OF TAX IMPACTS OF REASSESSMENT
The Curran Administration is proceeding with its plan to reassess every property in Nassau County. Homeowners have received or will soon receive a written notice from the Department of Assessment stating the fair market value and tentative assessed value as determined by the Assessor.
These notices are required by New York State Law when there is a reassessment of properties. The Administration has deliberately included as little information as possible in the notices. Specifically, the notices do not tell residents what the impact of the new assessed values will be on their taxes.
Presiding Officer Richard J. Nicolello has demanded that the Administration be more transparent in the information provided to homeowners. The Legislature has passed a law that forces the Administration to send a second notice, which must contain the tax impacts. Residents should receive the tax impact notices later in November.
Taxpayers should know that over the strong objections of the Republican Majority the Administration has circumvented the State cap that limits assessment increases to no more than 6% in a year. That is why it is vitally important that there be full disclosure as to what the effect of the Administration’s plan will be.
“One of the most basic responsibilities of government is to tell residents what their taxes are,” said Presiding Officer Nicolello. “The notices sent by the Assessor fail this basic responsibility. We will do all that we can to make sure the Administration provides taxpayers with the information they need to protect their rights.”
Homeowners are urged to call the County Assessor at 516-571-1500 and should demand that they be informed what their estimated taxes will be based on the new value.
Homeowners should also call 516-571-4374 to make an appointment to review the new valuation of your property to see if it can be reduced. Appointments can also be scheduled online: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/4638/Ask-The-County-Assessor
