[ARCHIVED] Legislator Bynoe Celebrates Haitian Flag Day in Westbury

Bynoe - Haitian Flag Day 2022

(WESTBURY, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe (D - Westbury) partnered with the North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Councilman Robert Troiano, the North Hempstead Town Board, the Westbury Union Free School District and the Haitian American Political Action Committee of New York in supporting the Town of North Hempstead’s seventh annual Haitian Flag Day Celebration on Saturday, May 14.

Held inside Westbury’s Yes We Can Center, the festive community celebration marked the 219th anniversary of the Haitian flag’s adoption and commemorated the revolution against France that led to the formation of the Republic of Haiti. At the request of Legislator Bynoe, the Joysetta & Julius Pearse African American History Museum of Nassau County curated an exhibition dedicated to Toussaint L'Ouverture, who emerged from slavery under French rule to lead the Haitian Revolution and become a historic founding father of the republic.

“Our lives are enriched by the cultural contributions that are made by the community of Haitian Americans who proudly call Nassau County home,” Legislator Bynoe said. “I am thankful to all of the government, education and community partners whose contributions make this celebration of Haitian Flag Day such a joyous and meaningful celebration each and every year. May we continue to embrace the spirit of Libète, Egalite, Fratènite in all that we do in the days ahead.”
