(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) joined her colleagues in government and leaders of the Nassau County Police Department in paying her respects during the annual Police Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, May 16.
Following remarks from County Executive Laura Curran and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, police leaders recognized the 40 officers who were killed over the years in the line of duty, including those who succumbed to illnesses related to their service in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. An array of floral tributes, donated by various police department fraternal organizations, were then staged and dedicated next to the Honor Roll where those officers are memorialized. The ceremony concluded with a reading of the names of former Nassau police officers who passed away during the previous year and a flyover by a NCPD police helicopter.
“This annual observance poignantly highlights the willingness of our police officers to put their lives on the line in service to Nassau County residents,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I was proud
to stand with my colleagues and express my gratitude to all of our dedicated Nassau County Police Department members and commemorate those who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.”
