WHAT: Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) will recognize Norooz - the Persian New Year - in the Legislative Chamber of the Nassau County Legislature on Tuesday, March 19.
Legislator Birnbaum became the first Nassau County Legislator to recognize Norooz when she inaugurated the practice last year. Norooz, which translates to “new day,” is an ancient Zoroastrian holiday celebrated by Iranians of all faiths during the Spring Equinox and is symbolic of the end and renewal.
The program includes a performance featuring vocalists Ghazal Mizrahi and Sherry Sharifian; pianist Oswaldo Machado; and Dr. Avraham Dilmanian on the Santur. Poems highlighting Iranian culture and history will also be recited. In addition, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder are scheduled to offer remarks.
Legislator Birnbaum’s second annual Norooz observance is being presented with support from the Sephardic Heritage Alliance, Inc. (SHAI), Iranian Mothers Association (IMA), the United Mashadi Jewish Community of America (UMJCA) and the Ester Chapter of Hadassah.
Persian refreshments will be served. Guests are asked to kindly RSVP with Legislator Birnbaum’s office by Friday, March 15 at 516-571-6210 or ebirnbaum@nassaucountyny.gov.
