WHAT: Legislator Siela Bynoe is pleased to host her second blood drive for 2014. The blood drive will be held at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center in Westbury. According to the Nassau County Medical Center, ninety percent of the U.S. population will need donated blood by the time they reach the age of 72. Yet fewer than five percent of eligible donors regularly give blood. The percentage of racial and ethnic minority donors is even lower. It is essential for eligible minority donors to give blood. Even though blood compatibility is not based on race, rare blood types often are. Several blood subtypes exist within certain populations. For instance, there are some rare blood antigens that are unique to specific ethnic and racial groups. In many cases a Hispanic or African American donor’s blood is a better match for a patient who is from the respective minority group.
“Promoting health and wellness among my constituents is one of my highest priorities. Giving the lifesaving gift of blood can save up to three lives with just one donation,” says Legislator Bynoe. “I am looking forward to seeing a lot of community support at the blood drive.”
