Dear Resident,
As we all know, Long Island is susceptible to hurricanes. Some of us are still dealing with the aftermath of Irene in 2011 and the remnants of Sandy in 2012. While we cannot prevent hurricanes from hitting Long Island in the future, being prepared can help us to address the challenges posed once one arrives. With hurricane season running from June 1st through November 30th, now is a good time to think about preparation. According to the National Weather Service, the 2022 hurricane forecast in the Atlantic Ocean shows above-average activity. The Eastern Atlantic is predicted to get 14 to 21 named storms this year, including six to 10 hurricanes (winds above 74 mph) — and three to six of those could be major storms with winds above 111 mph.
Nassau County’s Office of Emergency Management, along with other federal, state, and local agencies are gearing up and will be well-prepared to respond to any future storms. However, it’s also important for our residents to familiarize themselves with steps that they can take before and during a storm.
