Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens exemption program provides tax relief to eligible homeowners aged 65 or older with limited income ($58,399 or less). This section includes forms, affidavits, and resources to assist seniors in applying for property tax reductions.

Limited Income and Disabilities 

The exemption is available to property owners with physical and mental impairment who are substantially unable to engage in major life activities. The exemption decreases your assessment by up to 50% -- depending on an owner(s) level of income that cannot exceed $58,399.

STAR Program

The New York State School Tax Relief (STAR) program provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners through two tiers: Basic STAR for primary residences and Enhanced STAR for seniors meeting income requirements. Firefighters and Ambulance Workers

Home Improvement

The law allows for an eight-year decreasing property tax exemption reduction for permitted alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two-family home. The exemption in the first year will be based on 100 percent of the assessed value of the improvement and be reduced on a sliding scale thereafter.

Home Improvement for Physically Disabled

Section 459 of NYS Real Property Tax Law allows for a property tax reduction for home improvements that serve to facilitate the use and accessibility of a home occupied by a disabled resident.

First-Time Homebuyers

Nassau County offers a property tax exemption for first-time homebuyers who purchase newly constructed primary residential properties. This exemption applies only to newly constructed homes and is not available for existing properties or resale homes
