2022-2023 PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

2022-2023 PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE

Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker wants Nassau homeowners to know that applications to file for tax exemptions for 2022-2023 are now available and is encouraging residents to file applications for any exemption they may be eligible to receive.  The application deadline is January 3, 2022. There is no cost to file any of the tax exemption applications.

“There are a number of tax exemptions available to help Nassau homeowners reduce their property tax burden and many residents may be eligible for one or more of the programs,” said Legislator Walker.  “Taking the time to see if you might be eligible is certainly worthwhile, since it could result in hundreds or even thousands of dollars in property tax savings.”

Below is a brief description of some of the tax exemptions available.  These applications and  other supplemental forms can be found by visiting: www.nassaucountyny.gov/3575/exemption-forms.
Residents can also call Legislator Walker’s office at: 516-571-6217.

  • NY STATE BASIC STAR EXEMPTION: This program provides a partial property tax exemption from school taxes for owner-occupied, primary residences for all homeowners, regardless of age, with an annual income of $500,000 or less. For first time applicants or for additional information call NYS at: 518-457-2036

  • NY STATE ENHANCED STAR EXEMPTION: Available to senior citizen homeowners, 65 years of age or older, during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual federal adjusted gross income does not exceed $92,000.  Seniors whose annual incomes exceeds $92,000 may still be eligible for the Basic STAR Exemption.

  • VETERANS REAL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION: Qualifying applicants will receive an exemption from county and town taxes but not from special district or school taxes unless they have opted in. The exemption is equal to 15% of the assessment for war-time service and an additional 10% reduction for service in a combat area or for having received an Expeditionary Medal.

  • COLD WAR VETERANS EXEMPTION: Provides a partial tax exemption (as adopted by the local municipality) to veterans who served during the Cold War period (1945-1991). Limited to the primary residence of a qualified veteran, and is applied only to general municipal taxes, not special district levies or school taxes unless they have opted in.

  • SENIOR CITIZEN PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION: Senior homeowners aged 65 or older whose income is under $37,399 are eligible for this property tax exemption.

  • PHYSICALLY DISABLED TAX REDUCTION PROGRAM FOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS: This property tax exemption is equal to the amount of any increase in value of property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and accessibility of the property by (a) a resident owner of the property who is physically disabled or (b) a member of the resident owner’s household who is physically disabled if the member of the household resides on the property.

  • LIMITED INCOME DISABILITY EXEMPTION: Homeowners whose income is under $37,399 and have a physical or mental impairment not due to alcohol use or illegal drugs can receive this exemption.  Proof of disability is required. NOTE: If the property is already receiving an exemption under the Senior Citizen Property Tax Exemption it cannot also receive this benefit.

  • VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER/AMBULANCE WORKER EXEMPTION: A primary residence of an enrolled member of at least 5 years of an incorporated volunteer fire company, department or ambulance service can receive a partial exemption from municipal, school taxes and special tax levies.  The exemption extends to lifetime for Nassau County members with over 20 years of volunteer service.
