Homeowners & Renters Can Now Register for Individual Direct Assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov
MINEOLA, NY (September 10, 2021) – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran today announced that FEMA has approved a Major Disaster Declaration in Nassau County. The declaration will allow homeowners and renters who suffered from the remnants of Hurricane Ida to register for federal disaster assistance relating to uninsured and underinsured damage at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.
“I fought hard to ensure Nassau was included in FEMA’s disaster declaration because too many families in our County continue to suffer,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. I thank Governor Kathy Hochul for her extraordinary efforts and leadership during this time, along with all our partners on the state and federal level. I urge anyone in Nassau who was affected by the remnants of Ida to visit FEMA’S website and begin the application process as soon as possible.”
Eligible victims will be able to apply for direct assistance, which may include home repairs, temporary housing, low-cost loans, and other programs to help recover.

"Tropical storm Ida gravely impacted homes and working people across Nassau County and Long Island. Working with County Executive Laura Curran, together we urged the Biden Administration to provide FEMA support to the county. Today, those efforts were successful," said Congressman Tom Suozzi.

“Today’s declaration ensures that any Nassau County resident who was impacted by Ida’s wrath will have access to essential resources that will help them restore their homes,” Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. “For every Nassau County resident who was impacted by Ida, today’s announcement is a truly a godsend,” Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Nowhere in Nassau County is equipped to withstand nine inches of rain in a four-hour span, which is why this storm was especially devastating for communities like Glen Cove, Port Washington and Sea Cliff. As the cleanup continues and we are unearthing just how widespread the damage truly is, it is clear that this federal aid will be absolutely vital for local families. Applicants applying for FEMA Disaster Assistance should be ready to provide the following information:
- A current phone number where you can be contacted;
- Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying;
- Your Social Security number, if available;
- A general list of damages and losses; and
- If insured, the insurance policy number, or the agent and company name.
