MINEOLA, NY (August 17, 2020) - A week after Nassau County Executive Laura Curran turned up the heat on PSEG Long Island – calling on the utility to reimburse residents and businesses for spoiled food and medication due to the prolonged power outage – the utility agreed.
“While we are not done fighting, this is a good first step from PSEG to making amends,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, who wrote joint letters with Representative Kathleen Rice and the Long Island State Senate Delegation last week to PSEG, demanding reimbursements. “I will continue seeking refunds for customers on their utility bills.”
As part of PSEG’s announcement, customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. Customers will also be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration.
“It’s clear that PSEG was not prepared to respond to this storm, and I am convinced that PSEG still does not have an accurate handle on how many people actually lost power and for how long,” said Curran. “I am urging every resident who was affected to fill out a claim as soon as possible.”
Customers can apply for reimbursement at www.psegliny.com/claims and will have until September 16, 2020 to file claims.
