Garden City, NY – Today, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by the Nassau County Department of Public Works’ (DPW) leadership and County paving contractors to provide an update on 2019’s unprecedented road resurfacing program and discuss the comprehensive plan for 2020 roadway construction season. Since January, more than 165 lane miles of Nassau County roadways have been repaved which is more lane miles resurfaced in one year than any other year. The County is on track to reach their year-end goal of 200 resurfaced lane miles, utilizing $65 million dollars from the County’s 2019 Capital Budget.
In 2020, the County will engage in a similarly aggressive roadway improvement campaign with the goal of repaving another 200 lane miles, in addition to 66 lane miles of “Where and When” pavement repairs – a spot improvements program to address County roadways until a full roadway resurfacing can be undertaken. The 2020 roadway resurfacing program will utilize $70.5 million dollars from the County’s recently submitted Capital Budget.
“We cannot afford to take our foot off the gas when it comes to restoring our pothole-ridden County roads neglected by Ed Mangano’s Administration for far too long,” said County Executive Curran. “Maintaining safe roads is critical to our economy, the safety of our residents and is a basic function of government. I am very proud of the hard work of our DPW staff and contractors. Be assured - we are moving full steam ahead in 2020.”
The website www.nassaucountyny.gov/roadwork launched earlier this year, allows the public to see which County Roads were resurfaced in 2018 and 2019 (thus far) and which roads will be paved by year-end and during the 2020 construction season.
Examples of completed locations in 2019 include: Woodbury Rd., Round Swamp Road, Cold Spring Rd., Berry Hill Rd., Underhill Blvd., Washington Ave., in Plainview, Middle Neck Rd. in Sands Point, Roslyn Rd. & Shelter Rock Rd.
Examples of upcoming resurfacing locations in 2020 include: Grace Ave., Searingtown Rd., Franklin Ave. in Hempstead, Dutch Broadway, Cove Rd., Old Country Rd. in Plainview/Old Bethpage, Glen Cove Ave., Lakeville Rd. & Community Drive.
In order to accomplish the planned roadwork in 2020, the County will be utilizing a standard Resurfacing Contract, in addition to three Priority Resurfacing Contracts including a MEGA Resurfacing Contract with an incentive/disincentive to finish the roads sooner and a Resurfacing Requirements Contract which includes “Where and When” work to meet their planned goals.
The County and its’ contractors continue to work very closely with various utility companies, including National Grid, PSEG, New York American Water and others in order to prevent newly resurfaced roads from being cut open for planned utility work. The County also works in close coordination with the LIRR’s Third Track project.
