MINEOLA, NY – Today, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that she will be expanding her comprehensive series of Property Tax Exemption Workshops, adding eight additional workshops to the lineup during evening and weekend hours to further accommodate residents’ schedules. The series of Property Tax Exemption Workshops kicked off on Wednesday, July 10th and runs through November at libraries and community meeting halls throughout the County. The workshops are part of the County Executive’s continuing efforts to help homeowners reduce their property tax burden and to bring Department of Assessment office operations to each community in Nassau County.
“We heard the voices of our residents and today we are delivering for them by expanding our robust series of workshops to accommodate our residents’ diverse and busy schedules,” said Curran. “Public outreach remains a top priority to ensure that Nassau’s property owners have the resources they need to take full advantage of the many exemptions available. Homeowners who meet the State’s income and ownership requirements could find themselves saving hundreds of dollars off their property tax bill each year.”
Department of Assessment staff are on hand at each workshop to answer questions and provide on-site individual assistance to any homeowner who would like to file for an exemption including Veterans, Senior Citizens, Cold War Veterans, Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers, Limited Income Disability, or Home Improvement. The updated schedule is outlined below with the new weekend and evening workshops highlighted.
In addition, the Department of Assessment is in the process of preparing and mailing renewal applications for certain property tax exemptions to previous applicants with a letter, instructions and the updated schedule of Property Tax Exemption Workshops. This is the first of three reminder letters that will be sent to homeowners to ensure they renew their exemptions for the 2020-2021 tax year before the January 2, 2020 deadline.
For residents who are first time applicants and believe they may be eligible to receive an exemption, all forms are available on the Department of Assessment website: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/3575/Exemption-Forms
Homeowners who plan to file for a property tax exemption at the workshops are encouraged to MAKE AND BRING COPIES of their 2018 Federal and State Income Tax Forms, Driver’s License, and any other documentation that is required PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP.
Documentation requirements can be viewed on the applications that are available on the Department of Assessment website at www.nassaucountyny.gov/1501/Assessment.
