[ARCHIVED] Mangano Issues Consumer Alert for Companies Offering to File STAR Applications

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs today issued a Consumer Alert, warning the public to beware of firms that offer to file Basic or Enhanced School TAx Relief (STAR) Property Tax Exemption applications on behalf of residents. Firms have recently offered to file this document with the County at an exorbitant fee that is usually an amount equal to the actual tax savings.

Residents can file a STAR application for free and assistance is available for all residents at the Nassau County Department of Assessment. Residents should also be aware that New York State is requiring all homeowners to re-register in order to continue receiving a STAR exemption. In October 2013, homeowners received instructions on how to retain their STAR exemptions. Homeowners will need to reapply for the STAR program online or by phone by December 31st, including verifying their salaries, Social Security numbers and primary residence.
