[ARCHIVED] Curran Asks Nassau County Assessment Review Commission to Convene 6-40 Review Committee

MINEOLA, NY - Continuing efforts to ensure best practices, today the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission (ARC) announced the formation of the 6-40 Review Committee to examine its applicable laws, rules and procedures. The committee will be led by Robin Laveman, chairwoman of ARC, and co-chaired by John Terrana, commercial property tax attorney, and Sean Acosta, residential taxpayer representative. The Committee will be tasked with providing recommendations to update and streamline ARC’s inconsistent and outdated rules, last updated in 2003, along with applicable laws and procedures.

The committee’s name is derived from Sections 6-40.0 through 6-40.5 of the Nassau County Administrative Code, which contain provisions relating to ARC.

“Inconsistencies in the laws and rules used by ARC were much less significant when the assessment roll was frozen for nearly a decade,” said Curran. “Now that ARC is staffing up and reaffirming its goal and its duty to conduct meaningful review of grievances on individual properties with a more accurate assessment roll, a diligent review and improvement of outdated policies is essential. With Robin’s eminent experience and leadership, I am confident this committee will be efficient and impactful.”

The Committee will include Nassau County Legislators, members of the tax certiorari bar, residential representatives, representatives from the County Attorney’s office, community stakeholders and members of ARC.

“I look forward to working with a diverse range of industry professionals and local legislators who will bring keen insight to this review process. Streamlining and improving our laws, rules and procedures will help ensure fair and accurate review of claims and protect Nassau County’s property owners,” said Laveman.

Any changes to ARC’s enabling legislation will require approval by the State Legislature and implementation by the County Legislature, while modifications to the ARC rules will be subject to approval by the County Legislature.

“I am eager to work with State and local legislators to bring necessary reforms to ARC’s laws and rules and hope to receive their support in this initiative,” said Curran.

ARC is an independent agency, separate from the Nassau County Department of Assessment, which is responsible for annually reviewing all applications for correction of assessment on the Nassau County assessment roll.
