MINEOLA, NY – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran today announced that for the 2019 Long Island Marathon, NEFCU has joined as the new title sponsor and Race Awesome has joined as Race Director. Races will feature new courses and a new health and fitness expo.
“The Long Island Marathon is one of the region’s most exciting athletic events, and I am pleased to team up with NEFCU and Race Awesome to offer even more to our runners and spectators,” said Curran.
The Long Island Marathon has a rich history and has been held the first weekend in May for 46 years. Over time, more racing options were added, and the event became, “Long Island Marathon Weekend.”
“There are few events on this great island that are as iconic and long-standing as the Long Island Marathon, which has evolved from a small race that attracted avid runners more than 40 years ago, to a days-long festival for kids, families and the entire community,” said John DeIeso, executive vice president of NEFCU. “The first weekend of May has become synonymous with the Marathon, and we are thrilled to be able to help keep this amazing event running for the enjoyment and betterment of all Long Islanders."
“We look forward to bringing our passion, expertise and excellent standard of customer experience to the 2019 NEFCU Long Island Marathon,” said Race Director Corey Roberts.
With the support of the Nassau County Police Department, the 2019 marathon, half marathon and 10k races will feature new courses that will highlight more of Nassau County’s Parks. The full marathon course will head south down Merrick Avenue, making its way to Cedar Creek Park before returning to Eisenhower park. All races will now start in Eisenhower Park, improving the experience for our spectators and athletes.
Last year’s race was a great success with over 5,000 registrants. 2019 NEFCU Long Island Marathon events will include a full marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1miles), 10K, 5K, 1k and kids races.
In addition to the marathon, Race Awesome is creating an all new Long Island Health & Fitness EXPO, to be held over two days in a premium marquee tent at the marathon’s start/finish-line area. The EXPO will welcome fitness vendors from across Long Island, as well as NEFCU Long Island Marathon sponsors.
This family-friendly health and fitness weekend is aimed at motivating people to engage in a healthy lifestyle within their community. The free, non-ticketed event will be open to the general public. Expo visitors can sample nutritious food, try out the latest exercise equipment, test drive technology, explore recovery products and listen to lectures from industry professionals and pro-athletes.
“We are very proud to offer Long Island Marathon Weekend to our residents and visitors,” said Curran, “This event combines athletics and Long Island pride and we want to continue its rich tradition.”
