Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran stood with District Attorney Madeline Singas, Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, and Department of Social Services Commissioner John Imhof, Ph.D., to observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
“We’ve got a growing elderly population here in Nassau County and we are seeing more incidents of elderly abuse. People taking advantage of the elderly should know they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” said County Executive Curran. “To stem this kind of abuse, the Department of Social Services offers more than 70 programs having to do with health, counseling legal aid, and homecare.”
