Massapequa, NY -- Nassau County Executive Laura Curran (3rd from the left) joined Seatuck Environmental Association in moving river herring over the dam at Massapequa Lake as part of a special operation authorized by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to help return river herring to spawning waters upstream.
The event was part of Seatuck’s strategic plan to guide the restoration of river herring and American eel populations across Long Island. The strategy includes the restoration of access to Long Island's rivers and streams through the construction of fish ladders and the removal of dams, leading to increases in fish populations and resulting in a cascade of ecological benefits.
