[ARCHIVED] Nassau County Comptroller Schnirman and TOH Supervisor Gillen Announce Audit of TOH Animal Shelter

Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen Announce Audit of Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter

Audit will start with focus on financials, staff qualifications, and expenses

WANTAGH, NY – Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen today announced the Office of the Nassau County Comptroller will be restarting an audit of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.

“Working with my team at the invitation of Supervisor Gillen, we have put together a plan that will let us get to work right away examining the shelter’s financial records, expenses, and staffing,” Schnirman said.

In addition to a review of hiring practices, duties, and responsibilities, the initial focus of the audit will be an in-depth review of the shelter’s finances, fiscal controls, and expenses.

“Local residents have flooded my inbox with grievances, which I believe merits an independent, outside audit from the county comptroller - who can determine if the shelter has gone off track and help inform our decisions,” said Gillen.

At the conclusion of the audit, the Office of the Nassau County Comptroller will make its findings public and issue recommendations to the Town of Hempstead.

“We are going to get straight to the facts and follow the money wherever it will lead us,” Schnirman said. “That is what my team does best, and we look forward to working with the town to move this process forward.”

“It is my hope that a full and independent review of the shelter’s fiscal practices, staffing requirements, and hiring procedures will help shed light on the issues facing our facility,” said Gillen.

This restarted, focused audit from the Office of the Nassau County Comptroller will provide a clear report of finances and staffing and act as a first step for the Town of Hempstead to restore trust in the facility.
