Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announces a weekend of programs in celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. County Executive Mangano, in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee and the Nassau County Commission of Human Rights, has planned two events that pay tribute to the leader of the American Civil Rights Movement who was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an incredible man and leader whose insight helped to create a new understanding of universal peace and humanity in our society,” said County Executive Mangano. “On Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day we commemorate the spirit of freedom, equality and dignity of all races. Together, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and remember the difference we can make in our local communities by exemplifying the qualities of compassion and brotherhood, thereby developing more harmonious relations among all people.”
An Ecumenical Interfaith Service is planned for Sunday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church, located at 94 James Burrell Avenue in Hempstead. Additional information is available by calling (516) 485-1499.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 32nd Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon will be held on Monday, January 16th, at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel, 101 James Doolittle Blvd. in Uniondale. Honorees include: Nassau County Police Detective Lt. Jeiver Espinosa, Rev. Tae Jin Kwon, Human Rights Activist Claudia Swansey and Rotary of Hempstead/Uniondale President Tina Hodge-Bowles. Proceeds from all weekend events will benefit the MLK Committee Scholarship Fund assisting local high school seniors seeking higher education. The purchase price of a ticket is $75.
