MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that an East Meadow man was sentenced today to 18 years to life in prison for bludgeoning his wife to death with a dumbbell in April 2015.

Hector Bejarano, 55, of East Meadow, pleaded guilty before Judge Jerald Carter on October 28 to murder in the 2nd degree (an A-I felony). The NCDA recommended a sentence of 20 years to life in prison.

“This defendant savagely murdered his wife and was on the run for two weeks while relatives desperately searched for answers,” DA Singas said. “Mirian Bejarano’s life was tragically cut short by her husband’s heinous actions and I hope today’s sentence helps bring some closure to this grieving family.”

DA Singas said that on April 28, 2015 at approximately 4 p.m., police responded to a 911 call made from a residence on Prospect Avenue in East Meadow shared by Bejarano and his wife. Upon their arrival, police found Bejarano’s wife of nearly 30 years, Mirian, 52, lying on the floor unconscious. She had been beaten to death with a dumbbell.

Bejarano fled the scene after committing the murder and was on the run for two weeks. He was arrested by members of the Nassau County Police Department at his East Meadow home after he returned to eat and do laundry on May 13. He also left a confession note in a bedroom of the home for his daughter.

Assistant District Attorney Ania Pulaski of DA Singas’ Major Offense Bureau prosecuted the case. Bejarano is represented by Dana Grossblatt, Esq.
