Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will pay tribute to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s commitment to public service for the past 100 years, by lighting the dome blue on the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building from January 9th through January 16th.
In recognition of the Phi Beta Sigma Centennial, Sigma men from around the world will gather to celebrate the 100 year founding of their fraternity. The fraternity has held a century long commitment of Culture for Service and Service for Humanity through international programs such as Bigger and Better Business, Education and Social Action.
“Nassau County is proud to celebrate the historic public service of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,” said County Executive Mangano. “The good work that Phi Beta Sigma has performed throughout the world for the past 100 years extended to assisting Hurricane Sandy victims, and other residents in need here in Nassau County.”
Phi Beta Sigma was founded on January 9, 1914 by three collegiate men at Howard University to promote academic excellence, provide assistance to persons in need, and to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship and service. In Nassau County, the Mu Delta Sigma chapter is a graduate chapter who has had an extensive impact to our area. They provide scholarships to high school seniors, mentor youth, volunteer and assist communities to promote positive health and wellness and spread awareness for organizations such as, American Diabetes Association, March of Dimes walk-a-thons, Toys-for-Tots Donations and Stop the Violence Campaigns.
