Mineola, NY- Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos released his audit of microMEDIA Imaging Systems, Inc., a vendor working on the “Health & Human Service Imaging Project” for Nassau County and found that 38 employees were underpaid by $461,466 during the period from January 1, 2012 to July 10, 2014, in violation of its contract and the Nassau County Living Wage Law. Additionally, the vendor did not accurately compensate 14 employees for accrued time off. Furthermore, it may have breached its contract by assigning it to another corporation without the required prior approval by the County.
“It is disturbing to find that a County vendor, who contractually, and under County Law, had an obligation to pay employees the Living Wage, underpaid their low wage employees by $461,466,” said Comptroller Maragos. “Having been caught in the violation of the law, microMedia’s response was shocking, saying that it will refuse to pay these employees and will seek a retroactive exemption from the County Executive. The Comptroller’s Office will recommend legal action against the vendor to ensure that the employees are paid.”
The “Health & Human Service Imaging Project” for Nassau County is a process to convert Department of Social Services documents into an electronic format.
The Nassau County Living Wage Law was enacted by the Nassau County Legislature in 2006 to raise the minimum wage of County employees and employees working for most of the County’s contractors. The Comptroller’s Office is responsible for monitoring compliance with the Law. The Living Wage is currently $15.50 an hour without health benefits, or $13.58 with health benefits.
