[ARCHIVED] Legislators Gaylor and Giuffre Support the Shutting Down of Capri Motel in West Hempstead

CapriHotel

West Hempstead, NY—On August 24th, Legislators John Giuffré and Bill Gaylor joined with Hempstead town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin, Jr, Councilman Tom Muscarella, and community members to support the closing down of the Capri Motel on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead. The town, along with the Nassau County Fire Marshal and Police Department, shut down the motel earlier in the year.
The Capri Motel has been the scene of many incidents of criminal activity, including prostitution, drugs, and attempted murder. The West Hempstead community has for years been trying to get the motel closed and to rid their community of the crime it brings.
On Thursday, August 31st, the Town of Hempstead will be holding a special hearing of the town board to review the documented evidence of criminal activity at the motel and their public safety violations. They will also be hearing public comment from West Hempstead residents and will determine if the motel is a public nuisance.  The hearing starts at 11:30 AM and will be held at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall at 1 Washington Street in Hempstead.
For years, the Capri Motel has been a bane on West Hempstead’s community,” Legislator Giuffré said. “Residents and community members have been loud and clear that they do not want this crime-infested business in West Hempstead. I thank Supervisor Clavin and the town board for their work in shutting the motel down, and I stand with the community on wanting to make it permanent.”
“As one of the legislators that cover part of West Hempstead, I am very pleased to see the Town, along with the fire marshal and police, have shut down the Capri Motel,” Legislator Bill Gaylor said. “This motel has been the scene of numerous public safety violations and has been a hotbed for crime. I join with the West Hempstead community who want it shut down for good.”
