Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced the sentencing of a Brooklyn man for the 2012 killing of a fellow inmate while awaiting trial in Nassau County Jail in East Meadow.
Charles Creekmur, 27, was sentenced to nine years in prison with five years of post-release supervision by Nassau County Court Judge Meryl Berkowitz. Prosecutors asked for a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. Creekmur was found guilty in July by a Nassau jury of Manslaughter in the 1st Degree (a B violent felony) after a five-day trial before Judge Berkowitz.
“Nothing will reverse the death of Mr. Brown, but with this case, my office worked hard to ensure that those who commit violent acts will be held accountable – regardless of where they are,” DA Rice said.
DA Rice said that on Jan. 7, 2012, Creekmur strangled Antwan Brown, 26, of Long Beach, in Brown’s second floor cell after a dispute at the Nassau County Jail in East Meadow. Nassau County Corrections officers arrested Creekmur shortly after the incident.
At the time of the incident, Creekmur was awaiting trial on robbery and weapons charges stemming from a July 2011 attempted holdup. Creekmur pleaded guilty to Attempted Robbery in the 2nd Degree (a D felony) and was sentenced by Nassau County Court Judge Jerald Carter in March 2012 to three years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Martin Meaney of DA Rice’s Major Offense Bureau is prosecuting the case. Creekmur is represented by Joseph Lo Piccolo, Esq.
