[ARCHIVED] LEGISLATURE PASSES BILL TO GIVE RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES UNTIL JUNE 11TH TO PAY PROPERTY TAXES

LEGISLATURE PASSES BILL TO GIVE RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES UNTIL JUNE 11TH TO PAY PROPERTY TAXES WITHOUT INTEREST OR PENALTIES

As Nassau residents and businesses struggle to cope with the financial hardships caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, which has halted almost all economic activity in the county, Majority Legislators have passed an emergency resolution to give residents and businesses until June 11th to pay property taxes without interest or penalties.

The bill passed unanimously, by a vote of 19-0. The bill has been sent to the County Executive for her signature or veto.

Under current law, the deadline for paying taxes is May 11th, 2020. Residents and businesses that pay their property taxes after May 11th, are hit with an extra interest payment. If they pay after May 31st, they must also pay penalties. This legislation would move that deadline to June 11th.

"The Nassau County Legislative Majority is proud to lead the fight to protect Nassau taxpayers as they deal with the financial burdens brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak,” Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said. “We will continue to look for additional ways to support our residents and small businesses during this difficult time. I urge the County Executive to sign this bill immediately to provide a measure of relief to our residents and small business owners."
