Statement from Nassau County Executive Curran on Dorian Preparedness
County Monitoring Potential Storm Impact, Residents Urged to Prepare Now
MINEOLA, NY – Hurricane Dorian is a serious storm, and although current predictions indicate it will pass east of Long Island, we’re remaining vigilant in the coming days to prepare for potential forecast changes. In-house staff has been identified for emergency response, including outside debris removal contractors and debris monitors if necessary. All County construction sites are ready to be buttoned up. Flood prone areas have been evaluated for potential debris blockages. Our emergency evacuation centers and evacuation routes have been identified. We’ll be coordinating with LIPA, PSEG, LIRR, the Governor’s Office, Red Cross as needed in the coming days.
The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Fire Marshal personnel, Department of Public Works, Department of Health, Department of Social Services and the County’s emergency animal response are all ready to assist residents and businesses as needed in the coming days. I urge all residents – especially those in low-lying areas – to make a plan with your family so you are prepared should Dorian, or any other storm, affect Nassau County.
HURRICANE PREP TIPS FOR RESIDENTS:
- Create an emergency preparedness kit with food and water, batteries and other basic supplies for each family member to last at least three days. Remember to include essential medications, copies of important documents and special items for children and pets. - If you are in a flood zone know your evacuation route and create a plan with your family
- Keep a list of emergency phone numbers
- Plan what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency and what to do if you must evacuate.
- Check on any elderly or disabled neighbors
- Make sure all leaks and repairs are secure on your home
- If a storm is predicted, remove any loose items from your yard
