Nassau County offers the following tips for residents to protect themselves and others during high temperatures:
- Check on relatives and friends, especially the elderly.
- Increase time spent in an air-conditioned environment.
- Drink fluids – especially water. Avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine and sugar.
- Take cool baths.
- Individuals especially at risk, such as the elderly or those with chronic illnesses should refrain from physical activity, avoid being alone, keep their sleeping area well ventilated, and avoid falling asleep in a hot room.
- Eat light, but nutritious foods.
- Avoid the sun at the hottest times of the day.
- Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothing.
- Never leave anyone – especially a child or a pet – in a parked car
- To report a power outage contact PSEG LI: 1-800-490-0075
- If any person or animal experiences symptoms of heat stroke or exhaustion, get medical help immediately. For any medical, police or fire emergency call 911.
The ASPCA offers the following tips for keeping your pets safe in the heat:
- Give your pets plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid.
- Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.
- Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool
- Open unscreened windows pose a real danger to pets, who often fall out of them. Keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed, and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured.
- Never shave your dog: The layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. And be sure that any sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pets is labeled specifically for use on animals.
- When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt.
As your Nassau County Executive my top priority is to ensure all County residents are safe during this heat emergency. I encourage you all to follow these tips to keep you, your family and pets safe and cool during this heat wave.
Sincerely,
Laura Curran, Nassau County Executive
