LONG BEACH, NY – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker, and Nassau County Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein today announced that the boil-water order issued by Nassau County for the City of Long Beach has been lifted, effective immediately. All residents in the City of Long Beach can now safely use and consumer the local water supply.
“Today Nassau County has lifted the boil-water order for residents in the City of Long Beach,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “I’m grateful to Governor Cuomo for the swift support his office provided us this weekend, and to our teams at the Department of Health and Emergency Management who worked tirelessly to resolve this issue. The health and safety of our residents is always the highest priority of Nassau County. We will continue to work hand-in-glove with our municipalities and water districts to ensure that every drop of our water supply remains clean and reliable.”
“In accordance with the New York State Sanitary Code, and after extensive testing, the Nassau County Department of Health is lifting Boil Water Order for the City of Long Beach Water System,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein. “The City of Long Beach Water Supply has tested negative for bacteria and is safe to drink.”
“I’d like to commend leaders at every level of government for coming together to help the residents of the city of Long Beach,” said Legislator Denise Ford. “While no one ever hopes to have to use the plans we have in place for emergencies like this, the government reaction was seamless, helping residents when they needed it the most. I’d also like to thank the Long Beach residents themselves for staying calm and helping their neighbors in any way they could in the face of this crisis.”
"I would like to thank Governor Cuomo for his unwavering assistance, as well as to County Executive Curran and Commissioner Eisenstein for their round-the-clock efforts,” said State Senator Todd Kaminsky. “It was important to have all levels of government working together during a challenging period. We must also all give a huge thank you to the hardworking City of Long Beach employees for their tireless commitment to our community and its residents."
On Friday, the Nassau County Department of Health received a distribution sample result collected from the City of Long Beach Water System which tested positive for E. coli. Based on the sampling result, Nassau County ordered the City of Long Beach Water System to issue a Boil Water Alert to their community.
Nassau County immediately activated its Emergency Action Plan, sending a team of water sanitarians and engineers to resolve the issue. With support from the State Office of Emergency Management, New York State and Nassau County together delivered over 130,000 bottles of water to support residents on Long Beach this weekend.
Following comprehensive testing that returned consecutive negative results, the Nassau County Health Department is now able to confirm that the water supply is clean and safe to consume across the board.
The County Executive would like to thank Governor Cuomo, Nassau County Department of Health, Office of Emergency Management, the NYS Department of Health, and the City of Long Beach for their cooperation and resolve in swiftly addressing this matter.
