“It is unfortunate that County Executive Laura Curran and the Minority Caucus of the County Legislature have decided to take away the ability of our residents to decide for themselves whether or not Nassau County should move back to an elected County Assessor. In the 10 years since the County moved to a politically-appointed Assessor, we have seen an endless series of errors and during the Curran reassessment, we have seen a complete lack of independence, transparency and accountability. Residents deserve better. The actions of the County Executive and Minority legislators today in purposely silencing the voice of the public in determining how their own government will be run is a dangerous commentary on the state of the democratic process in Nassau County and the lack of confidence and respect they appear to have for our residents. Despite today’s vote, I will continue to fight to restore a transparent, fair and accountable Assessment process for the taxpayers of Nassau County.”
