Hector Bejarano, 54, bludgeoned his wife to death with a dumbbell
MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that an East Meadow man who bludgeoned his wife to death with a dumbbell in 2015 pleaded guilty today to second degree murder charges.
Hector Bejarano, 54, of East Meadow, pleaded guilty before Judge Jerald Carter to murder in the 2nd degree (an A-I felony) and will be sentenced to 18 years to life in prison on January 4. Prosecutors recommended 20 years to life.
“This defendant viciously beat his wife with a dumbbell and his brutality cost this innocent woman her life,” said DA Singas. “Thanks to the work of the Nassau County Police Department and our prosecutors this depraved defendant has been brought to justice.”
“This case shows why it is so important to raise awareness about domestic violence,” Anthony Zenkus of the Safe Center LI said. “We thank the Nassau County District Attorney’s office for paying special attention to these victims and getting them the justice they deserve.”
DA Singas said that on April 28, 2015 at approximately 4 p.m., police responded to a 911 call made from a residence on Prospect Avenue in East Meadow shared by Bejarano and his wife. Upon their arrival, police found Bejarano’s wife of nearly 30 years, Mirian, 52, lying on the floor unconscious. She had been beaten to death with a dumbbell.
Bejarano fled the scene after committing the murder and was on the run for two weeks. He was arrested by members of the Nassau County Police Department at his East Meadow home after he returned to eat and do laundry on May 14. He also left a confession note in a bedroom of the home for his daughter.
