Carlos Morinville allegedly committed eight burglaries in Westbury and New Cassel
MINEOLA, N.Y. – Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a grand jury handed up a 12-count indictment on an alleged serial burglar who struck eight Nassau County homes between June 4 and June 29.
Carlos Morinville, 22, was arraigned today before Acting Supreme Court Justice David Sullivan on indictment charges of:
- Burglary in the 1st Degree (a B violent felony)
- Eight counts of Burglary in the 2nd Degree (a C violent felony)
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree (an A misdemeanor)
- Menacing in the 2nd Degree (an A misdemeanor)
- Resisting arrest (an A misdemeanor)
If convicted on the top charge, the defendant faces up to 5 to 25 years in prison. Morinville, who pleaded not guilty, is due back in court on Nov. 13. He was remanded for a violation of probation on another matter and bail on the indictment charges was set at $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash.
“The defendant allegedly went on a month-long burglary spree terrorizing the communities of Westbury and New Cassel,” Acting DA Singas said. “Thankfully, a brave senior citizen detained the defendant long enough for police officers to arrest him.”
Acting DA Singas said that Morinville’s burglary spree started at noon on June 4 when he entered a Westbury apartment and stole currency and jewelry. On the morning of June 10, the defendant entered a New Cassel property and stole electronics. The next morning, Morinville broke into another New Cassel home and stole currency, jewelry and electronics. At approximately 5:30 p.m. on June 13, Morinville burglarized another Westbury home stealing computer products.
A week later, at approximately 12:20 p.m. on June 19, the defendant entered a Westbury residence and took a watch and computer products. At approximately 1 p.m. on June 22, Morinville broke into a Westbury home and took a video game system, a bike, clothing, a watch and other items.
Morinville broke into another Westbury home on the morning of June 25 and took jewelry.
The defendant’s spree came to an end on June 29 when he broke into a New Cassel home through a window and snuck into the basement. A female victim, 65, discovered Morinville when she noticed the basement light was on. When the defendant attempted to flee he produced a box cutter and motioned towards a male victim, 73. The male victim called 911 and police officers from the Nassau County Police Department Third Precinct arrived at the scene and arrested Morinville, who resisted arrest.
Assistant District Attorney Ilyssa Spergel of Acting DA Singas’ County Court Trial Bureau is prosecuting the case. Morinville is represented by Glen Hardy, Esq.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
