[ARCHIVED] New York State Awards Nassau County $5M for Cost Savings That Led to 2012 Budget Surplus

June 21, 2013

Mineola, NY- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo recognized Nassau County with a $5 million award which rewards local governments that have reduced expenses to protect taxpayers.

The NY state competitive grant program is intended to reward local government efforts which reduce costs and ease the burden on local property taxpayers. The awards were given to only two municipalities on Long Island (Nassau County and the Town of East Hampton.) The grants awarded as much as $25 per resident, up to a maximum of $5 million. Nassau County will book this $5 million award as 2013 revenue.

“The NY State $5 million award is further recognition of the extraordinary cost-savings achieved by the County which led to the year-end 2012 budget surplus without a property tax increase,” Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos said.

The award recognized the County’s ability to reduce expenditures in 2012 by over $125.8 million below budget without affecting services. These cost savings were primarily responsible for achieving the County’s unaudited budgetary surplus of $41.6 million.
