- Nassau County Overdose Prevention
Nassau County continues to be committed and steadfast in its efforts to combat the opioid epidemic that we are currently experiencing. Whether it is a problem involving prescription drug misuse and abuse, with substances like Oxycontin or Fentanyl or an addiction to Heroin our program provides prevention and education services, community supports and integrated treatment interventions.
Nassau County has been addressing the opioid crisis on multiple fronts, one of them is educating its residents on the use of Naloxone, also known by the trade name Narcan. Nassau County residents, first responders and human service staff learn how and when to administer the lifesaving antidote that can reverse the fatal effects of an Opioid overdose and save a person's life. Our free Narcan trainings also offer community resources, speakers and information on the latest treatment approaches.
Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disabilities became certified as an Overdose Responder Program in late 2012, the first County Certified Program in the State, outside of New York City. Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency & Developmental Disabilities Services has partnered with community agencies, colleges, local school districts, fire departments, libraries and religious organizations and has hosted more than 210 training events and has trained more than 9800 people on how to administer Narcan since its inception.
Substance Use Disorder is a very complicated and complex disorder that requires a multi-faceted treatment approach. For the county to make a significant impact to resolve the current crisis involves support and coordinated efforts of people in recovery, impacted family members, prevention programs, treatment agencies, local government units, the pharmaceutical industry, medical insurance carriers, law enforcement, and public policy planners.
Despite the many obstacles that persist our primary goal is to help prevent drug related deaths and provide individuals in need with a second chance at recovery, improved health, and a better quality of life. That person may be your friend, your family member, your neighbor or your colleague.
In addition, to offering the Naloxone Trainings, the Behavioral Health Awareness Campaign offers other training opportunities and can provide speakers to Nassau County agencies, schools and residents. Our programs include but are not limited to mental health awareness, identification of the early signs and symptoms of behavioral health issues and co-occurring disorders. We also can design presentations to meet your specific needs and or concerns. Our 24-hour HELPLINE (227-TALK) can also provide referrals and support when you are encountering a family problem or personal issue.
